Kawa Kamal

Biography

Kawa Kamal was born on January 1, 1955, in the Kurdish region of Northern Iraq. From an early age, he displayed a deep fascination with art and nature, spending much of his childhood observing the landscapes of his homeland. His artistic journey began in earnest during his primary school years, when he received lessons from two renowned Kurdish artists — Ata Qazaz and Smko Tofik — who were known for their expertise in plein-air nature painting. Under their mentorship, Kamal developed a keen eye for capturing the delicate interplay of light, color, and atmosphere found in the natural world.

In January 1993, Kawa Kamal immigrated to the Netherlands with his family, seeking new horizons and artistic inspiration. The transition marked a pivotal chapter in his life and career. Enchanted by the Dutch countryside, its vast open skies, reflective waterways, and tranquil farmlands. Kamal began to focus his work on the serene beauty of Dutch landscapes.

One of his most distinctive themes is his series of paintings inspired by the waterlilies of the Netherlands. Through these works, Kamal blends his Middle Eastern artistic sensibility with the soft, atmospheric tones of Northern European light, creating pieces that are both vivid and meditative. His plein-air approach allows him to paint directly within nature, capturing fleeting moments of reflection and movement on the water’s surface.

Over the years, Kawa Kamal has showcased his artwork in numerous exhibitions across the Netherlands, earning recognition for his poetic depictions of the Dutch landscape. His paintings reflect a harmonious dialogue between his Kurdish roots and his adopted homeland — a celebration of nature’s resilience and beauty across cultures.

Today, Kamal continues to live and paint in the Netherlands, drawing inspiration from the ever-changing seasons, the calm rhythm of rural life, and the quiet elegance of waterlilies that mirror the sky.
